Patients Don’t Wear A Sign Around Their Necks

Imagine three patients walking into your podiatry business, and they’re all wearing a sign around the neck. And on one of the signs, it says, I want a pair of orthotics. The other person walks in, and it says, I do not want orthotics, and in brackets, it says (under any circumstances). And then the third person says, I don’t know if I need orthotics; I need more information.

How much time would you spend with that first patient? How many questions would you ask each of them? Would you shorten the time with the patient saying, I do not want orthotics and dedicate more time to the one that needs more information?

Now, imagine your receptionist says I made a mistake, I put the wrong sign on the wrong patients.

What would your thinking be then? Would you be going, oh my God, what did I just do?

And this is the point of this video; you should treat every patient the same way because patients do not walk into your podiatry business with a sign on them that says, yes, no or more information, please.

So remember, for every patient that comes into your podiatry business, don’t prejudge them on what they’re wearing. Don’t prejudge them on their occupation, the car they’re driving, or where they live. Treat every patient equally. Every patient deserves the same amount of time, the same amount of attention and the same information. And then let the patient decide if orthotics or some other type of treatment is a good fit for them.

Because, as I said, they don’t have signs on them. You may have a patient that walks in, and you think, oh, they’re going to say yes, because of their occupation and they have health insurance, everything about them says yes, and then they say NO.

And then you’ll have another patient that you might be prejudging. I’m not going to explain this type of treatment; I will give them a cheaper option because I don’t think they can afford it.

Just remember patients don’t have signs. So please don’t prejudge your patients, give them all the same information, treat them all with the same amount of respect and the same amount of care. And then let them decide whether you’re a good fit for them.
