The Self Help Addict with Daniel Gefen

Daniel Gefen lives in Israel and is the author of a book titled The Self-Help Addict and today we talk about what makes some people successful and others not so successful. You cannot continue to consume content without creating content. You cannot just be a buyer without also being a seller, and unfortunately, 90+% of the world are reactive and not proactive.  

If you want to avoid feeling overwhelmed, you need to stop overthinking and waiting for the perfect time to get started. Whatever it is you've been working on, hit the button and put it out there.

What Have You Got To Lose?

A lot of people do not care about perfection; they want the content and value you're providing.

Information Obesity

You can spend hours watching Youtube videos, but until you start applying what you've learnt it means nothing. Don't become obese on information. 

3-Types of People

You cannot please everyone, so stop trying to. There are three types of people. 

  1. The Lovers & Raving Fans. They love your content, whether it's a blog, podcast or an event because they see value in what you do and always feel they receive great information.  
  2. The Haters. They will look for fault in everything you say. When you get 'haters' you know you've made it. 
  3. Vanilla People. These are the people that don't care. They have no opinion one way or the other. If you have a lot of people in this group you're playing too safe. 

You need to focus on group one. If you create content, a blog, for example, you need to be talking to them. Don't try and please the haters. 

Donald Trump

Donald Trump is the perfect example. You either like him or hate him, there's not a lot of people sitting on the fence. 

The less people you have sitting on the fence the more it shows that you're doing the right thing. 

If you're sending emails and you have people telling you to go away, this is good as it means you're hitting a chord. This type of feedback is excellent and remember you want to talk to your fans. 

Tony Robbins Made A Decision

If you don't take action you're just a spectator in life. The only difference between Tony Robbins and the people in the crowd is they bought a ticket to be at the event, and Tony Robbins made a decision to be on stage. 

He decided at some stage to put himself out there, and it paid off. 

Self-Help Addiction

Self-doubt, procrastination and indecision create a cycle of self-help addiction. Ninty plus per cent of the world are reactive, not proactive. They are buyers, not sellers, and they are consumers, not creators. 

If you read books, take some form of action at the end of every chapter. Most addicts will highlight and boldly underline the essential parts of the book and do nothing. You need to STOP, PAUSE and TAKE ACTION. 

Take Action When You're Emotionally Charged

After you read a book, listen to a podcast or watch a movie your emotions are high, this is when you need to take action. As your feelings decrease you lose that 'heat of the moment', therefore when you're in the heat of the moment you must take action. 


Infomercials and online ads tell you to CALL NOW or CLICK HERE multiple times because they know just telling you once will not make you take action. 

All self-help books hold value, but they are worthless if you take no action. 

Monday Morning Tip

Before you turn on your computer and check your emails, grab a sheet of paper and write down the top three things you want to get done today. Make sure they are three things that, if nothing else, will make you feel happy with your daily efforts. 

Therefore when you get distracted on Facebook or Instagram, you can go back to this sheet of paper and get back on track.
