What’s the Difference?
A patient:
-
Comes when they need something
-
Compares you to other podiatry clinics
-
Can be price-sensitive
-
May or may not ever return
A fan:
-
Comes back regularly
-
Trusts all your recommendations
-
Refers friends and family without being asked
-
Chooses you, even when you’re not the cheapest, or closest
That’s a completely different relationship.
Why Most Clinics Never Build Fans
Because they focus on the transaction, and then the next upcoming one.
And there’s nothing wrong with that… But there’s nothing memorable about it either. And if it’s not memorable, it’s easily replaceable.
Experience Creates Fans
Fans are created through experience, not clinical outcomes alone.
Think about the last time you had an exceptional experience somewhere. I’m sure you didn’t keep it to yourself; you would have told someone.
That’s what you want in your clinic. You want patients walking out the door and telling their friends, family and work colleagues all about their experience with you.
Look at Your Clinic Through Fresh Eyes
If you walked into your clinic for the first time, what would you notice?
-
Does it feel welcoming or clinical?
-
Is your team engaging or transactional?
-
Do patients feel known, or are they just a number?
These small details shape the overall experience more than you think.
The “Would They Talk About This?” Test
Here’s a simple filter you can apply to everything you do in your podiatry business:
“Would a patient tell someone about this?”
If the answer is no… It’s probably just average. If the answer is yes… you’re onto something.
This doesn’t require big changes; sometimes it’s as simple as remembering personal details or adding a small, unexpected touch.
Or you may create a more relaxed, human interaction, making the environment feel less clinical.
Fans Drive Growth Without Advertising
Here’s what happens when you build fans:
It’s Not About Being Perfect
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be different in a way that matters, because that’s what people remember and that’s what they talk about.
If you want to grow your clinic… Stop thinking like a clinician for a moment and start thinking like a customer.
Because the clinics that stand out aren’t always the most advanced… They’re the ones people don’t stop talking about.
If you’re ready to move your clinic from “just another option” to a place people genuinely recommend, it might be time to look at your business from a different angle.
That’s exactly what I help podiatrists do. Whenever you’re ready to explore that, please reach out.
