Stop Running on Autopilot: How Your Robot Brain Limits Your Business Growth

Dec 4, 2025

Most podiatrists don’t realise how much of their day is governed by habit.

In fact, at a recent Business Black Ops event I attended in Arizona, we explored the idea that up to 95% of what you do each day is run by your “robot brain”; your subconscious routines and default behaviours.

And while routines can be helpful, they can also quietly strangle your growth.

“No innovation has ever come from the robot brain”.

– Business Black Ops

The Robot Brain Limitations

Your robot brain keeps you doing what you’ve always done. It’s brilliant for brushing your teeth, locking the clinic, and following your morning routine. But it’s terrible for innovation.

It will never help you break a pattern, create a new service, change your appointment structure, or rethink your business model… because the robot only repeats what it already knows.

Intentional thinking

To grow, you need moments of deliberate, intentional thinking. Time where you consciously step out of autopilot and ask yourself, “Why do I do it this way?” or “Is this belief still serving me?”

These small interruptions to routine are where breakthroughs happen.

If your clinic feels repetitive, uninspired, or directionless, it may not be a business problem at all; it may be a robot brain problem.

The good news? Once you recognise it, you can change it.

To dive deeper into this idea, listen to the whole conversation I had with Dr Peter Wishnie on Episode 394 on the Podiatry Legends Podcast. Available for free on all podcast platforms, or you can watch my interview with Peter Wishnie on YouTube
