Eddie Gordon is a mixed martial artist and winner of the UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) – Season 19. He’s a motivational speaker, entrepreneur and Bestselling Author of Forever Truckin – Mastering The Will To Win.
In this episode we discuss:
Why being in business and being a fighter are quite similar. In both you have to struggle mentally, physically and emotionally. Our bodies can take a lot, but our minds can take a lot more.

When an opportunity presents itself you have to be prepared to step out of your comfort zone and like every entrepreneur, growth and learning only occurs when you step out of your comfort zone
Educated Fighters
It’s important to point out that Eddie has a Double Degree in Finance and Marketing/Communications and he left his comfortable, well paying desk job at the age of 27 to follow his dream of being a professional fighter.
Your Only Young But Once
You’re only young but once and you shouldn’t lose your passion for competition just because you get older. When you have the competitive spirit you’ve got to compete. It’s part of who you are.
Anything we focus our minds on we can achieve it. It’s all about unlocking the passion we all have in us.
His Book – Forever Truckin
Gary Vee encouraged Eddie to write Forever Truckin following a documentary made of his life that won an Emmy Award. We all have a story and we need to share it with others.
Perfectly Imperfect
The biggest difference between success and failure is our mindset. You don’t need to be perfect, but you need to believe that you will be successful. It’s okay to be perfectly imperfect.
Team Culture
Eddie is a member of the Serra-Longo fight team and he believes their gym has an amazing team culture, which has been developed from the top. Every member has total respect for each other.
If you look at any business that is not succeeding, there’s normally a culture problem and it starts at the top. Unhappy, disrespected employees become negative, and negativity becomes contagious.
Getting Ahead
If you have a passion for hat you do, you’re willing to read, learn and build on from other people’s experiences, you’re going to be way ahead of the game.
A person with a positive mindset will always outlast someone with a negative mindset, because they will be prepared to put in the required time necessary to be successful. This relates to everything, sport, business, etc.
Strong WHY
You need to have a purpose, a WHY and it needs to be super strong, so you can remind yourself why you started the journey in the first place, otherwise it’s very easy to give up when things get tough.
If you’re starting a business, trying to lose weight or beginning an exercise program, there’s going to be obstacles and tough moments, and only your WHY will keep you going.
A strong WHY makes the HOW and WHEN irrelevant.
When you look at it, it’s very simple, but it’s definitely not easy. If it were easy everyone would do it.
It’s hard to have integrity in the moment – Stephen Covey
This is why you need to prepare your mind way ahead of time and already make a decision on what you’re going to do when you’re faced with a particular challenge or situation.
Just One More
When you’re tired and you want to give up, just tell yourself success is just on the horizon, therefore just do one more. If you can do just one more second, one more step, or one more rep than you did yesterday, it means you’re improving.
You’re telling your mind what to do by your actions. If you get up and get dressed ready for exercise, your mind will respond.
And when you start receiving compliments about how good you look, it will fuel that fire to keep going. You’ll exercise more, eat better and probably drink less.
Shortcuts
There are no shortcuts, except a shortcut to failure. Shortcuts ma give you instant gratification, but they’re not sustainable long-term.
You’ve got to take control of your own life and destiny by doing the work.
We have two choices in life. We can either make an EXCUSE or we can EXECUTE. You can feel bad for yourself or you can make something happen. You have to stop being a passenger and get in the drivers seat of life.
You cannot blame others or point blame if you do not succeed. If you want a better business, a better life, then go and do the work. Don’t rely on others.
However if you don’t know how to do something – go and find the person who does. There’s nothing wrong with asking questions and asking for help.
Monday Morning Tip
Go into your business and work your face off with a mindset that you’re going to be great. You need to believe you’re going to be successful way before anyone else thinks you’re going to be successful.
