Connecting the Dots in Creativity
Creativity thrives on the ability to connect seemingly unrelated ideas. Steve Jobs of Apple once said, “Creativity is just connecting things.” Apple itself exemplifies this concept by merging cutting-edge technology with elegant design.
Beyond Apple, examples of this creative synergy can be found everywhere, from Capital One Café blending banking with specialty coffee (in collaboration with Verve Coffee) to Yellow Spruce Roasters combining coffee with a wine bar experience. These innovations demonstrate how linking ideas can lead to unique, value-driven offerings.
Drive-Through Innovation: A Lesson in Convenience
The evolution of the drive-through is another powerful example of creativity at work. What began with Kirby’s Pig Stand’s drive-in restaurants in 1921 led to Red’s Big Hamburger creating the first drive-through concept. By 1948, In-N-Out Burger advanced this innovation with a two-way speaker box for ordering.
Jack in the Box went even further, opening the first drive-through-only fast food chain in 1951 and coining "National Drive-Thru Day" on July 24th. These milestones show how reimagining existing conveniences can lead to enduring business models.
Howler Head is banana-infused whisky that is an absolute treat to drink. In contrast, Ned Australian Whisky is a nice whisky, but they've combined it with cherry cola, and it is horrible, so sometimes creativity can fail. Let's see if Coca-Cola Oreos hang around long.
Creativity in Podiatry and Emerging Technologies
Creativity isn’t limited to traditional industries—it extends to podiatry as well.
The integration of footwear and podiatry businesses is nothing new; however, 3D-printed orthotics are a combination of two dots (orthotics and 3D printing).
Most podiatrists I know are using AI to help with note-taking, and I will feature the owners of Clinical Notes AI in an upcoming Podiatry Legends Podcast Episode.
