Which is Better, Waymo or Uber?

When my wife and I were in Scottsdale, Arizona, the locals urged us to take a WAYMO instead of an Uber back to Tempe, so we did. I enjoyed the experience, and it got me thinking a lot about the noticeable difference between WAYMO and Uber and what we can learn from this from a business perspective.

What I Liked About Waymo

1. They arrive on time and don’t cancel on you: I have had Ubers cancel after confirming multiple times, especially on short trips.

2. You don’t have to talk to the driver: This is great if you want to check emails on your phone or make a phone call.

3. They stick to the speed limit: I have experienced some very fast drivers and have not always felt safe.

4. The onboard screen clearly shows how far you are from your destination and the time.

5. The car was clean: Some Uber drivers do not care.

6. No smell of smoke: Waymo doesn't need to pull over for a quick smoke between drives. I didn't mention this in the video, but Waymo will also be drug-free.

7. You didn't have to listen to bad music that the driver likes.

8. Waymo was cheaper than Uber. Based on the trip we took from Scottsdale to Tempe, it was about 30% cheaper.

9. Waymo didn’t ask for a tip at the end of the trip.

Why did we like Uber so much?

I remember when Uber first started as an alternative to Taxis; it was pretty exciting, and most people raved about Uber.

The drivers were polite and helpful. They also provided bottles of water and mints, making the travel experience pleasurable…. more so than getting a grubby taxi.

The other added benefit when Uber started was that you knew what you would be charged from point A to B. In contrast, a Taxi was very dependent on the driver driving the shortest distance, and nothing was more annoying than sitting at a light (that they deliberately slowed down for) and seeing the money ticking over on the metre.

However, the distinction between Uber and taxis became less defined as time passed.

Benefits of an Uber

1. At present, Waymo does have limited geographical areas

2. A Waymo can only fit two large suitcases, so it's not good if there are three passengers. With Uber, you can book a larger vehicle.

3. If you get a good Uber driver, they can be very helpful when visiting a new city, as they will point out areas to see or to stay clear of.

Apply This Information to Your Business

Technology affects every industry, and as a business owner, you must embrace these changes and keep up. Saying, 'This is how we've always done it', is no longer acceptable.

If you don't change, adapt and be on a path of continual improvement, you will be left behind by the businesses that are early adopters of these technological changes.
